Abstract

AbstractAg(I) is more strongly solvated in dimethyl sulphoxide than in water. Evidence is presented from NMR and electrochemical work that Ag(I) is preferentially hydrated in dilute aqueous solutions of dimethyl sulphoxide. With increasing concentration of dimethyl sulphoxide the preferential solvation of Ag(I) is shifted from water to dimethyl sulphoxide. This behaviour is related to the characteristic properties of the binary solvent system.
