This study aimed to gather middle school students' opinions on the utilization of cryptologic methods in education. Using a case study approach, data were collected through a semi-structured interview form developed with expert input. The focus was on the effects of integrating cryptologic methods within the Information Technologies and Software course. The study involved approximately 105 middle school students. Data analysis revealed that students generally viewed cryptologic methods positively, highlighting benefits such as enhanced long-term and rapid learning, improved problem-solving skills, and increased interest and motivation through diverse teaching techniques. However, some students reported difficulties in learning cryptologic methods and a lack of interest. The findings suggest that engaging, sustainable, and rapid learning captures students' attention and enhances their focus. Integrating cryptologic methods into the curriculum holds significant potential for developing 21stcentury skills, including critical thinking, research, and problem-solving abilities, enabling students to connect clues and formulate solutions. The further integration of cryptologic methods promises to foster enjoyable and enduring cognitive gains in students' learning activities.

Analysing the concept of context in medical education
  • Nov 25, 2005
  • Medical Education
  • Franciska Koens + 3 more

There is increasing interest in the role of context in medical education, with the conjecture that learning in a clinical context may be helpful for later recall of knowledge. Although this may be true in a general sense, at a closer look it appears that the notion of context is not well substantiated in the medical education literature and that the concept is not clearly defined. Effects of context on learning appear to depend on type of learning task, the relationship or interaction between the context and the learning material, and motivational features of the context. Context is often implicitly regarded as a uniform concept but conceptual analysis shows that a distinction can be made in several dimensions. In this paper, we identify 3 different dimensions of context: a physical dimension, representing the environmental characteristics; a semantic dimension, reflecting how well the context contributes to the learning task, and a commitment dimension, representing the amount of commitment (in terms of motivation and responsibility) that is generated by the context. On these dimensions, context can be ordered from reduced (providing few cues, little meaning, little commitment) to enriched (many cues, much meaning, high commitment). This model can serve a dual purpose: first, to disentangle several aspects of educational contexts (e.g. as high in meaning but low in commitment), and second, to provide a theoretical framework to generate research on the influence of different contexts in education on students' learning.

  • Lurdes Gomes Neves + 1 more

In the educational context, three models of leadership with increasing importance - ethics, transformational and moral - have emerged, being the most developed the model of transformational leadership. This study aimed to analyze the internal structure of leadership questionnaires in the educational context and to know the construct validity of the ethical, moral and transformational dimensions of leadership in the Portuguese educational context. In a sample of 204 teachers, it was possible to verify the behavior of the three questionnaires in the validity of the construct and in the reliability. Leadership scales (Ethical Leadership Questionnaire, Transformational Leadership Questionnaire and Moral Leadership Questionnaire) presented good levels of adjustment to the factor structure and reliability values between acceptable and excellent. Considering the results obtained of innovative character in the level of the psychometric study of the different measures in the educational context will be relevant, in the future, to assess their concurrent validity in different samples of teachers.

The achievement of potential : an exploration in educational and social contexts
  • Jan 11, 2008
  • Anne Mcarthur

The Achievement of Potential: an Exploration in Educational and Social Contexts outlines a qualitative study conducted in the North East of Scotland within the context of Scottish Education. This study had four purposes: (1) to explore the meaning of the concept of potential; (2) to consider the factors affecting the achievement of potential; (3) to explore the conditions necessary to enable all children achieve their potential; and (4) to identify implications for Scottish education policy and practice. The concept of potential presented in the literature was diverse - different constructs were generated at different historical times and within different disciplinary frameworks. Common features suggest that potential is something that everyone is born with and everyone achieves to some extent. It is suggested that potential can change throughout life because of influences from social contexts, personal relationships and cultural factors. Those who participated in the empirical study had a complex and rich understanding of the term. They understood the concept to refer to people maximising the development and use of a range of capabilities. The three key factors identified and which interacted were: the children themselves with their capabilities, aptitudes and attitudes, the schooling system and the home and wider social, cultural context. With respect to teachers and parents, differences in their values, perceptions of the purposes of education, power differentials and community identity emerged as aspects of the educational and social contexts impinging on relationships with pupils and their level of school engagement. The conditions necessary for the achievement of the fullest potential for all children and the barriers preventing an increasing proportion of children achieving their potential within the established educational system are identified and discussed. Educational strategies to promote the greatest possible amount of shared perceptions and values and harmonious interaction among the children themselves, their educational context and their social context to allow the children to develop a secure identity are suggested.

Researching change: a praxeological case study on toddlers' educational contexts
  • Dec 1, 2012
  • European Early Childhood Education Research Journal
  • Sara Barros Araújo

The present study intends to deepen the understanding of processes of praxeological transformation in education and care contexts for children under three. This prime purpose is associated with evidence concerning these contexts in Portugal, namely the strong social need around them, some results from research that show their low level of quality and the almost total lack of studies focusing on the analysis of processes of praxeological reconstruction, aiming at enhancing the quality of these contexts. A case study on action research was developed in two activity rooms located in the city of Porto, considering the pedagogical and methodological perspective of Pedagogy-in-Participation. The study integrated an initial phase of multimethod evaluation of the quality of the activity rooms, followed by a second phase that encompassed a context-based teacher education process centred on the transformation of quality through processes of experimentation and reflection. The third phase involved a multimethod evaluation of effects of the context-based teacher education process which showed its positive impact on the professional learning of early childhood teachers. This impact was associated with a positive evolution of the quality of activity rooms, from low to medium levels, in different pedagogical dimensions. Results also pointed out the positive effects at the level of children's well-being, involvement, quantity and equilibrium of learning experiences. The study stresses the need to focus on praxeological research as a privileged way for the construction of knowledge, reconstruction of practices and the improvement of the quality of contexts for children under three.

Disentangling the individual and contextual effects of math anxiety: A global perspective
  • Feb 7, 2022
  • Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America
  • Nathan T T Lau + 3 more

Math anxiety is a common affective disorder in students that is characterized by intrusive thoughts that disrupt critical cognitive resources required for math problem-solving. Consistent associations between math anxiety and math achievement have been observed across countries and age groups, placing math anxiety among other important correlates of math achievement, such as socioeconomic status and magnitude representation ability. However, studies examining math anxiety's relation to achievement have largely focused on the effect of students' own math anxiety (individual effect), while little is known regarding the effect of math anxiety in students' educational context (contextual effect). Using three international studies of achievement (n = 1,175,515), we estimated both the individual and contextual effects of math anxiety across the globe. Results suggest that while there are consistent individual effects in virtually all countries examined, the contextual effects are varied, with only approximately half of the countries exhibiting a contextual effect. Additionally, we reveal that teacher confidence in teaching math is associated with a reduction of the individual effect, and country's level of uncertainty avoidance is related to a lessening of the contextual effect. Finally, we uncovered multiple predictors of math anxiety; notably, student perception of teacher competence was negative related with math anxiety, and parental homework involvement was positively related with math anxiety. Taken together, these results suggest that there are significant between-country differences in how math anxiety may be related with math achievement and suggest that education and cultural contexts as important considerations in understanding math anxiety's effects on achievement.

  • Artur Parreira + 2 more

This study is focused on the validation of a leadership test, based on a complex model of leadership skills, as a tool for assessing teacher’s educational competence, viewed as important in conduting adolescent and adult learning classes. Its specific purpose is to establish the norms and interpretation criteria for the test, in educational contexts. The model highlights the skills for leadership effectiveness, in a definite cultural setting, the Academy of East Timor National Police, viewing leadership as an essential way of steering human systems. The postulates of the model hypothesize the positivity of leadership as a result from an appropriate combination of power and information, while executing the fundamental activities of dinamizing and controlling the performance and results of the learning ativities. The test was applied to a sample of trainees in an educational military context, the Academy of East Timor National Police. The results of their evaluations on each competence for leadership effectiveness were valid and reliable. Nevertheless, the authors plan to test this tool in other specific contexts, in order to complete the evaluation of the leadership complex set of competences required by educational contexts.

In/formal sex education: learning gay identity in cultural and educational contexts in Mexico

  • Ignacio Lozano-Verduzco + 1 more

ABSTRACTThis paper addresses how educational and cultural contexts incorporate lessons around sexuality, particularly sexual and gender identity, and how these contexts impact on identity construction of gay men in Mexico City. We analyse the experiences of 15 gay men reported through semi-structured in-depth interviews and how they incorporate sexuality through socialisation with primary social institutions in Mexico's contemporary educational political context. The sample was divided into three generations, and was selected through maximum variability. Results show that men incorporate negative meanings around same-sex sexuality, and themselves from institutions such as school and family. Men are able to deconstruct these meanings through interactions with educational tools such as the Internet and interactions with gay friends. These results are discussed using post-structuralist perspectives to understand how identity is fluid and changing constantly, as well as the need to incorporate stigma-free curricular content in educational contexts.

Professional development arising from multiple-site workplace learning: boundary crossing between the education and clinical contexts
  • Sep 23, 2020
  • BMC Medical Education
  • Margot Barry + 3 more

BackgroundThis research explores the value of an inter-organisational jurisdiction, on the professional development of faculty members in their roles of researcher and educator. Faculty members from a Dutch university of applied sciences, who work in both the education and clinical practice contexts, participated in this research.MethodsIndividual semi-structured interview were conducted with nine faculty members, from various academic health professions, on their experiences of professional development arising from working in both the clinical and education contexts. In this exploratory, post-positive interview study, interview transcripts were analysed thematically.ResultsParticipants reported that working in two organisational contexts, whilst performing two faculty roles that span both contexts, enhances their ability to broker connections between research, teaching and practice. The boundary crossing activities which participants performed, contributed to professional development in all faculty roles. The broker role was not seen as being a unique role which is distinct from research and practice roles. Broker activities were seen as generic and supportive of the roles that bestow academic status and expertise.ConclusionsTo the participants in this research, the relevance of the broker role in professional development is not as evident as the relevance of roles that enhance specialisation and subject specific expertise. They consider broker activities as supportive to the roles of researcher and teacher. The broker role is time consuming, but not yet visible as a distinct professionalisable work-package in its own right. It is also not well defined in literature. A better understanding of the broker role could lead to its development in order to harness its professional development potential tenably across academic roles.

Learning Analytics in Small-scale Teacher-led Innovations: Ethical and Data Privacy Issues
  • Apr 23, 2016
  • Journal of Learning Analytics
  • María Jesús Rodríguez-Triana + 2 more

As a further step towards maturity, the field of learning analytics (LA) is working on the definition of frameworks that structure the legal and ethical issues that scholars and practitioners must take into account when planning and applying LA solutions to their learning contexts. However, current efforts in this direction tend to be focused on institutional higher education approaches. This paper reflects on the need to extend these ethical frameworks to cover other approaches to LA; more concretely, small-scale classroom-oriented approaches that aim to support teachers in their practice. This reflection is based on three studies where we applied our teacher-led learning analytics approach in higher education and primary school contexts. We describe the ethical issues that emerged in these learning scenarios, and discuss them according to three dimensions: the overall learning analytics approach, the particular solution to learning analytics adopted, and the educational contexts where the analytics are applied. We see this effort as a first step towards the wider objective of providing a more comprehensive and adapted ethical framework to learning analytics that is able to address the needs of different learning analytics approaches and educational contexts.

The Model of UDL Implementation Enabling the Development of Inclusive Education in Different Educational Contexts: Conclusions
  • Jan 1, 2021
  • Alvyra Galkienė + 1 more

This chapter presents the conclusions of research carried out by Polish, Lithuanian, Finnish, and Austrian researchers, aimed at providing an answer to the question of ‘How the implementation of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) enriches the practices of inclusive education in different educational contexts.’ The summary of the research results is followed by a model of the application of the UDL approach for the development of inclusive education. In the model, the UDL approach is presented as an approach of transforming the process of education and strengthening teacher inclusive attitudes, as a prerequisite for the pupil’s becoming an expert learner, a means for mobilizing the school community, a tool for reflecting teacher competences, and a new perspective for re-interpreting educational practices. The UDL application model is valuable in terms of developing inclusive education practices, as it allows us to see barriers to pupil education as well as relevant directions for improving education in any educational and cultural context.

Narratives of Self-Harm at School: Identifying Trajectories of Intervention in Educational Contexts
  • Mar 3, 2020
  • Europe's Journal of Psychology
  • Anna Gargiulo

Recent studies have shown that self-harming behaviour is increasingly widespread among adolescents, in particular at school. However, educational institutions perceive themselves unable to cope with the phenomenon, searching for protocols and guidelines to improve its management. Considering schools as useful contexts for intercepting the young malaise, this study aims at exploring the main meanings of self-harming behaviours made within the educational cultural contexts starting from the student’s narrations, in order to understand the possible trajectories of practice. In two high schools we have collected 96 narratives of self-harm written by adolescents (mean age 14; 74% females), who have been engaged in non-suicidal self-injury once in their life. The analysis of the narratives, produced with the help of a software for the automatic qualitative analysis of texts, has allowed to identify four prevalent themes organized into three sense vectors. The findings highlighted significant gender differences in the representation of the experience of self-harm between males and females, as well as the importance of meaningful relationships developed in familiar and educational contexts, which may allow the help seeking process. The emerging of culturally-shared meanings among adolescents within the investigated contexts may allow to think about possible protocols of preventive and clinical practices in schools.

Exploring the application of storytelling in educational and psychological contexts: How can the purpose and value of storytelling for children and young people be constructed?
  • Jun 1, 2021
  • DECP Debate
  • Bowden Lauren

This article explores constructions of storytelling across educational and psychological contexts and highlights the principles and values that can underpin storytelling practice. This area of interest arose due to the author’s engagement with storytelling in practice as a Trainee Educational Psychologist (TEP). The literature suggests that, in educational contexts, storytelling can be applied as a play-based approach or used to aid literacy development and cross-curricular skills. In the psychological domain, storytelling can be applied as a therapeutic approach to help adults understand children and young people’s (CYP’s) emotional responses. The author argues that storytelling can also be constructed as an interpersonal, dialogic process. Implications for Educational Psychologist (EP) practice will be outlined, such as, how EPs can support parental engagement and reflection on storytelling practice for teaching staff.
