Abstract
Provisional Measure No. 746/2016 dealt with the High School Reform excluding the Physical Education subject from the mandatory curriculum. The announcement of this Measure provoked discussions in educational circles and expectations on the part of education scientists in general. However, in the end, Physical Education was maintained as a mandatory curricular component in the reform. This essay brings the opinions of experts, who at the time deepened their reflection on this discussion. It also brings research carried out through the focus group strategy, carried out with students from the 1st year of high school at a federal public school in Niterói, about their previous experiences in physical education classes, to explore the topic among young people.
