Abstract
Student Self-Appraisal is a procedure to facilitate mutual planning within a clinical education placement by eliciting collaborative feedback from students and clinical educators. The procedure is designed to empower students to take control of their learning. Student Self-Appraisal involves a structured discussion between students and their clinical educators about their clinical education placement. Students are encouraged to recognise their accomplishments and to develop their own learning goals. The discussion also allows for the development of goals for their clinical educator and the clinical coordinator. This paper provides the results of a survey of speech-language pathology students and clinical educators regarding the benefits and disadvantages of using the Student Self-Appraisal procedure. The results of the survey suggest that it is a useful procedure to facilitate mutual planning in clinical education.
