Abstract
A description is given of the endocrine system of two Symphypleones, Bourletiella radula and Sminthurus viridis. The neurosecretory cells are similar to those of other Collembola, but there are in addition lateroventral cells and very obvious acidophile cells. As in Entomobryomorpha, the corpora allata are located some distance away from the neurohemal organs; these organs do not possess secretory cells, and they are connected to a cephalic blood sinus as in Orchesella. The corpus allatum of B. radula is supported by a process of the subesophageal ganglion, the most primitive arrangement known in Collembola. A neurosecretory cell is present at the top of the process; it is homologous with the “head-dress cell” of the corpus allatum of other Collembola.
