Abstract

The crystal structure of samarium monothio sulfide, was solved using single crystal refined data. Sm 2O 2S, crystallizes in the trigonal system with space group P 3 m1 (no. 164), Z=1 and cell constants a=388.7(1) pm and c=670.9(3) pm. The discrepancy indices of the single crystal structure refinement were R 1=0.031 and wR 2=0.077. Sm 2O 2S is isostructural with M 2O 2S (M=La, Ce, Nd, and Tm). The structure can be described as a packing of S −2 and O −2 anions with Sm +3 located in the center of a capped octahedron in which the seventh ligand (an oxygen atom) has been added to the triangular face formed only by O atoms.
