Abstract

1. A study was made of the structure and phase composition of alloys from the silicon corner of the system Si-Ti-Cr. Results of metallographic examinations, x-ray spectral and x-ray structural analyses, and microhardness determinations show that such alloys constitute heterophase systems whose principal structural components are a solid solution of titanium disilicide in chromium disilicide, free silicon, and a eutectic consisting of free silicon mixed with the two metallic disilicides. 2. The oxidation resistance of the alloys was studied in tests of 100 h duration at 1300°C, and the influence of titanium and chromium on their oxidation rate was determined. It was established that, under the test conditions investigated, titanium improved the oxidation resistance of the alloys. Raising the amount of chromium at constant titanium concentration had an adverse effect upon the oxidation resistance. 3. The oxidation rate of the alloys at 1300°C was found to obey a logarithmic law. Its values varied, depending on the alloy composition, from 0.13 to 0.46 mg/cm2-h over a period of 100 h.
