Abstract

The results of the study of ultrahigh molecular mass polyethylene gel fibres are discussed. Mercury porometry was used to determine the total volume of the pores. Contraction phenomena on evaporation of occluded liquids appreciably influence the structural characteristics of the gel fibres. Xerogels possess volumetric homogeneity and are formed like honeycomb cell construction. As a result of even slight deformation factors straightening of the molecular chains in the gel system is possible.
