Abstract

Short-range order (SRO) in the liquid Al90-xNi10Snx alloys has been investigated in a wide concentration range at 1573 K using the X-ray diffraction method and Reverse Monte Carlo simulations. The influence of the atomic size ratio and pair atomic interactions on the SRO of investigated liquid alloys are discussed. The SRO of the investigated ternary alloys is mainly determined by the energy factor, which is associated with a difference in bond energy in Ni-Al and Ni-Sn pairs. It has been found that Ni additions to the Al-Sn binary alloys promote phase separation in the liquid state and may influence the miscibility stability.
