Abstract

There has been a dearth of structural studies of the low temperature bilayer phases of unsaturated phophocholine lipids, partly because most of them have inconveniently low main phase transition temperatures TM as temperature is lowered from the fluid phase. This paper studies the phase behavior of bilayers of the long chain diC22:1PC lipids and the structure at temperatures below the TM of 13 °C. We were curious whether a ripple phase forms below TM, and whether there are gel and subgel phases like those that occur in saturated chain PC lipid bilayers.
