Abstract

A sputtering process has been developed for coating tungsten carbide cutting tools with titanium carbide and titanium nitride. For the titanium carbide coating, the x-ray diffraction results indicate that the coating has the stoichiometric composition as the target and has a (111) preferred orientation, Photomicrographs show the coatings to be of fine grain structure. The titanium carbide coating has hardness values of 2400 kg/ mm2 which are in agreement with the values of bulk titanium carbide. Effects of sputtering parameters on the coatings will be discussed also. Evaluations of coated tools versus uncoated tools show the coating increases the effective life of the tool, reduces tool force, and improves the surface finish.
