Abstract

1. Electrolytic Ni−B coatings are nickel (FCC lattice) with boron inclusions. 2. Depending on heat treatment temperature in a medium of boron carbide the structure and phase content of a composite Ni−B coating are different. On heating to 950°C the coating is nickel boride Ni3B, an interstitial solid solution of boron in FCC-lattice nickel, and a solid solution of nickel with an FCC lattice in α iron. 3. Composite Ni−B coatings exhibit high hardness. Coatings heat treated at 950°C have zero brittleness on the points scale; with increasing heating temperature brittleness increases.
