Abstract

Abstract 1. 1. The plant glycoside phlorizin has been shown previously to inhibit the transport of glucose by Hymenolepis diminuta, though the mechanism was not resolved. The effect of phlorizin on hexose transport by this tapeworm has therefore been re-examined. 2. 2. Phlorizin, at micromolar concentrations, was found to be a completely competitive inhibitor of active glucose and galactose transport. 3. 3. The aglycone derivative, phloretin, at the concentrations examined, has no significant effect on the initial rate of glucose absorption.
