Abstract

Image processing of HREM images can be done from digitized photographic negatives. Processing in Fourier space of HREM images of K 7Nb 15W 13O 80 has been shown to give atomic coordinates within 0.15 Å from those expected from the refined X-ray structure of the corresponding sodium compound. Image processing on- and off-line has also been made with a newly acquired Kontron IBAS II/IPS system. This system is briefly described. A plausible structure model for a new phase in the Bi-Nb-O-F system has been derived from HREM images. The formula is Bi 4Nb 5O 18F, and it is based on ReO 3-type slabs 2 and 3 octahedra thick with bismuth atoms between the slabs.
