Abstract

Structural modulation induced by phason degrees of freedom is discussed in connection with possible rational approximants for quasicrystals. All possible ways of the structural modulation can be derived on the basis of group theoretical arguments. A possible scenario of the structural transformation induced by the phason degrees of freedom in quasicrystals is investigated. Although softening of a particular phason mode drives the characteristic structural instability, the onset of uniform phason strains interrupts the growing soft-mode fluctuations to lead to a first-order transition into a strained phase with the phason configuration different from the soft phason mode. Kinetics of the structural transformation is discussed.
