Abstract

Structural modulation induced by phason degrees of freedom in icosahedral quasicrystals is investigated theoretically. Nonvanishing phason strains cause breaking of the icosahedral symmetry into those of its subgroups; T h, D 5d, D 3d, D 2h, S 6 and C 2h. These modulated structures are discussed in connection with several exotic crystalline alloys such as nearly quasicrystalline AlTM (transition metals) alloys and decagonal phases.
