Abstract
Reliability analyses of a transmission tower having four degrees of redundancy are carried out by evaluating bounds on the probabilities of failure. The probabilistic finite element method, presented here, takes into account uncertainties in loading, strength and structural parameters and is based on a first-order second-moment approach. Statistical moments of response quantities are first determined in terms of statistical moments of conductor loadings due to ice, wind or their combined action, structural properties and strength parameters. Effects of correlations between various random parameters are also taken into account in assessing the upper and lower bounds.
