Abstract
The elastic and inelastic neutron scattering from amorphous ice were measured in a wide momentum transfer (0.006 < Q < 50Å−1) and energy transfer (E < 100 meV) ranges. Similar experiments were performed also for the amorphous aqueous solution of methanol (CD3OH), sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), and xenon (Xe). All of the amorphous samples were prepared by vapor‐deposition at 8 K in a cryostat designed for this experiment. We have obtained several interesting results on (1) the structural relaxation which occurs below the glass transition temperature (135 K), (2) the low‐energy excitation below 6 meV, and (3) the effects of the solutes on the above two phenomena. Based on these results, we discuss the relation between the extent of hydrogen‐bond formation and the low energy excitations characteristic to amorphous states.
