Abstract

The structural phase transition of cesium nitrate, CsNO 3, has been investigated mainly by means of Brillouin scattering. These results indicated that the phase transitions of the CsNO 3 crystal are of extremely strong first order. However, it seemed to be suspicious whether or not the spontaneous polarization exists in the trigonal phase below the transition temperature T c (=154 ¯ ). We tried to observe the ferroelectrics hysteresis loops with the Sawyer-Tower circuit. It is confirmed that the spontaneous polarization exists below T c . The CsNO 3 crystal is a real ferroelectric in the trigonal phase.
