Abstract

Although the advent of computers has largely extended the feasibility of mathematical models for the purposes of design calculations, this development has by no means reduced the advantages of ‘realistic’ models simulating the proposed structure either in the actual material or a substitute material which can reproduce behaviourial and design characteristics. This paper discusses the use of models in the context of the design of two pedestrian subways incorporating reinforced concrete floor slabs using different types of test models, independently and in combination with computerised calculations.
