Abstract

MgO and Mg0.95Zn0.05O were synthesized using pyrophoric method followed by sintering at 600 °C. Various characterizations such as XRD, SEM, EDAX, FTIR, UV–Visible have been carried out for the studies of structural, microstructural, and optical properties of these materials. XRD confirms the samples having cubic phase with Fm-3 m space group. SEM shows the distributions of agglomerated grains with a small percentage of porosity. The compositional stoichiometry has confirmed from EDAX analysis. The band gap energies are found to be 5.98 eV and 5.88 eV for MgO and Mg0.95Zn0.05O. Decrease in band gap energy is due to addition of zinc to MgO.
