Abstract

The structural instability driven by soft phason modes in icosahedral quasicrystals is studied. Hydrodynamical instability due to slowing down of relaxation of the phason fields is discussed in comparison with thermodynamical instability, which leads to a spontaneous onset of the uniform phason strains. Diffuse scattering line shapes due to the phason softening are investigated.
