Abstract

A new type of nuclear graphite has been developed, consisting of noncalcined petroleum coke with coal-tar pitch binder. This material has strength properties that are about twice those of conventional graphites. The irradiation resistance of the new graphite is good over the temperature range of 800 ° to 1400 °C to a fluence of 1.3 × exp 26 n/m 2(0.18 MeV).
