Abstract
The brick-timber structure buildings built before 1950 in Shanghai were designed and supervised by European architects and engineers, and the actual construction work was implemented by Shanghai’s artisans. The structural construction combines Chinese and European techniques. They are a typical example of the integration of Chinese and European cultural and architectural styles. The durability, safety, and usability issues of brick-timber structure old buildings are prominent. Therefore, analysis of structural characteristics of brick-timber structure buildings is necessary to protect these excellent cultural heritage sites. Statistics of the typical characteristics of modern brick-timber structure buildings in Shanghai were made based on 120 brick-timber structure building inspection reports and the design data. This paper has analyzed the following four aspects: the building type and year of construction; materials; construction methods; damage situations. The contents above aim to provide a basis and theoretical foundation for the inspection, evaluation, reinforcement and renovation of modern brick-timber structure buildings in Shanghai.
