Abstract

This chapter focuses on structural aspects involved in the self-assembly of helicates. Structural aspects comprise structural dynamics, template effects, sequence selectivity, and self-sorting effects with regard to ligand size, number of binding sites, and especially stereoselectivity. The chapter illustrates diastereoselective self-assembly of an enantiomerically pure meso-helicate from 9, 9′-spirobifluorene-bridged bis(bipyridine) ligand. It discusses the preparation and isolation of enantiomerically pure helicates from chiral ligands. The chiral ligands discussed include 2, 2′-bipyridine ligands, 2, 2′:6′, 2″-terpyridine, 2, 2′:6′, 2″:6″, 2-quaterpyridine ligands, 2-pyridylimine ligands, hexadentate N-donor ligands, and oxazoline ligands. P-donor ligands, hydroxamic acid ligands, β-diketonate ligands, catecholate ligands, dianionic ligand units, and non-covalently assembled ligand strands are also considered.
