Abstract

A new series of superconducting compounds Hg 1- y Pb y Sr 4- x Ba x Cu 2(CO 3)O 7 has been synthesized. The critical temperature reaches a maximum of 68 K for x = 2; for the x = 1 and y = 0.5 compound, which is mainly studied here, the optimized T c is around 55 K. All Pb containing compounds exhibit a modulation along the [110] direction, to be attributed to an ordering between (Pb-Hg)O δ and carbonate groups. This ordering is highly variable depending, among others, on the local CO 3 content and gives rise to different commensurate and incommensurate superstructures.
