Abstract

Stroke Treatment for Every Person (STEP) began at the Royal Free NHS Trust in November 2000. This initiative, comprising 12 acute and 15 rehabilitation stroke beds, led to the formation of a recognized and respected multiprofessional stroke service that is implementing the National Clinical Guidelines for Stroke (Intercollegiate Working Party, 2002) and delivering the National Service Framework for Older People (Department of Health, 2001). The service has also been recently cited for its model of teamwork in the new government guide ‘What makes a good stroke service and how do we get there?’ (Department of Health, 2002).
