Abstract

ABSTRACT Asteromonas Artari previously described as a wall‐less biflagellated unicell exhibits a strip‐like cell covering on some cells. Both tannic acid fixation and freeze‐etch reveal the covering of electron opaque strips outside the plasmalemma. Cross striations are apparent in the surface strips. Golgi vesicles contain material presumed to be precursor components of the covering strips. The crystalline pattern of the freeze‐etched material is similar to that reported for other, walled volvocalean algae.
