Abstract

Summary The stresses at the intersection of two long circular cylindrical pipes of equal diameter under uniform normal internal pressure closed at the ends and rigidly connected over a plane elliptic section to form a “mitred” joint have been analysed employing the basic shell theory equations. The analysis is restricted to joints with small angles between the axes of the pipes. The results are found to agree with those of Green and Emmerson obtained from the theory of three-dimensional linear elasticity.
