Abstract

This paper focuses on the management of stress. It suggests that such management can be improved if we pay attention to the emotional basis of stress - that stress effects are the effects of dysfunctional negative emotions. The underlying theory of emotions explored here makes emotions central to human motives, actions, and learning. The consequence of dysfunctional negative emotions show up not only as feelings, but also as compulsive thoughts, inhibitions and acting out behaviours. Such phenomena are common to stress effects and to those problems which bring people to counselling.
