Abstract

The studies on the stress induced in the metal powder bed by hydriding reaction were conducted to obtain a quantitative relationship between the stress and the volume fraction of solid using a constant volume cell. The stress generated by the hydriding reaction reached about 450 Kg/cm2 for LaNi5 system. The stress and the volume fraction of solid relationship could be described by ln(φ/φ°) = βσ. Besides the hydrogen absorption capacity under the stressed condition was found to decrease in comparison with that in the unstressed condition. This is considered that if a certain amount of energy was stored in the powder bed, the hydriding reaction cannot proceed further.
