Stress Distribution in the Neighbourhood of the Loading Point of Girder Subjected to a Concentrated Load

Abstract

The author has calculated the local compressive stress distribution in the web of a girder, when a wheel load is applied on a rail resting on the top of the girder on a rigid foundation. The calculation is an extension of M.A. Biot's method, and the results have shown a satisfactory agreement with the experiments. In case of the girder on two supports, the local stress distribution in the web near the point of application of a wheel load has been found to coincide well with the results of this calculation, that is, the local stress distribution is scarcely dependent on a span.
