Abstract

Stress is a major risk factor for depression, yet not everyone who experiences stress becomes depressed. Identifying mechanisms of differential vulnerability is important for targeted treatment and prevention. We previously identified a role for the ventral hippocampus (vHPC) to nucleus accumbens (NAc) pathway in stress-induced susceptibility. Here, we hypothesized that pre-stress differences in vHPC-NAc neural activity may predict susceptibility to future stress.
