Abstract

200 sputum-positive patients were treated for at least twenty-four weeks with streptomycin 1 g, twice a week and PAS 5 g. twice daily. Sputum conversion was obtained in 83·5 per cent on chemotherapy alone and in 92 per cent with the aid of surgery. Streptomycin-resistant organisms were found at some stage in 11 cases. In 7 of these the organism was resistant to 5 μg./ml. PAS resistance was encountered in 6 instances, in 5 of which there was concomitant streptomycin resistance. The importance of using PAS in solution or cachet form and of giving doses of not less than 5 g. each is emphasized. These results seem to support the view that intermittent streptomycin and daily PAS is not less valuable than both drugs daily.
