Abstract

Reports some recent activities within the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) which aim to strengthen defences against international economic crime, focusing on offshore financial centres (OFCs) and including cooperation with the Financial Action Task Force. Covers recent work relating to the obtaining of information on beneficial ownership and control of corporate entities and trusts, including a template for countries to assess their information systems, and discusses OECD projects on combating harmful tax practices by encouraging OFCs to commit to the principles of transparency and information exchange. Outlines the work of the Financial Stability Forum from 1999 in assessing the importance of OFCs, and includes a list of uncooperative tax havens.
