Abstract

An expression for the streaming potential across a uniformly charged membrane under an applied pressure gradient is derived that is different from the usual streaming potential in a porous plug or a capillary. It is predicted that for typical membranes, this streaming potential should be observed as a membrane potential, the magnitude of which is comparable to that of the usual membrane potential induced by the electrolyte concentration gradient.
