Abstract

IT is well known that several types of liquid crystal can be formed in systems consisting of water and a high concentration of several surfactants. One of these liquid crystal forms is the smectic phase which has a layered or stratified structure. Stratification in lipid layers on the surface of water was observed by the Swedish school1. It was concluded that there was some structural analogy between this stratified surface phase and the smectic bulk phase. Long ago stratification was also observed by Johonnott2 and Perrin3 in free films drawn from aqueous sodium oleate.
