Introduction

The application of high-throughput microarray technology for determining global changes in gene expression is an important and revolutionary experimental paradigm that facilitates advances in functional genomics and systems biology. The output from EXALT provides similarity scores and statistical confidence levels for each signature match, allowing rapid perusal of relationships between the query data and entries in a database of other microarray experiments. A data flow diagram of computational steps is shown on the left, illustrating input of subject (Gene Expression Omnibus [GEO] dataset [GDS]) and query datasets, extraction of gene expression signatures, comparison with signature database, and generation of reports.
