Abstract
The article provides a theoretical background for inclusion of proverbial expressions in teaching any foreign language in the development of the communicative competences at university level. The tasks of the activities include the semantic equivalence of proverbs, the identification and decoding of their meanings that will make students use them in an appropriate cultural context.
