Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the current state of strategic planning in the United States' pharmaceutical industry. Information specific to the strategic planning process in the industry was collected and analyzed. Of the original 142 companies solicited, 52 companies responded. The respondents represented both generic and brand name firms. Drug firms used a wide variety of techniques in their strategic planning processes. Non-quantitative techniques were found to be favored over quantitative methods. The actual strategic planning process was found to be consistent throughout the industry, although strategic planning was carried out to a greater extent by brand name pharmaceutical companies. Further analysis revealed the size of pharmaceutical companies displayed a strong positive correlation to strategic planning.
