Abstract

Strategic management is presented as a sound management system that enables libraries to set priorities and make better decisions. Strategic planning should include a process of strategy formulation, application and evaluation, because a documented road map, the strategic plan, needs to be created to help libraries reach their strategy goals. Both strategic management and strategic planning are management focuses for identifying and tackling challenges, and both help libraries reach important objectives, do a better job of communicating their value and create value for the institution on which they depend. The points discussed include the pertinent terminology, the integrated process of strategic management and planning, the strategic plan documenting the process and the balanced scorecard as a strategic management model that helps forge a connection between a library’s strategies and its day-to-day activities.
