Research Article| April 01 2005 “Strange Characters & Expressions”: Three Japanese Translations of the Book of Mormon Van C. Gessel Van C. Gessel Van C. Gessel is professor of Japanese at Brigham Young University. He has served as chair of the Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages and as dean of the College of Humanities. He received his PhD in modern Japanese literature at Columbia University. Since July 2005, he has presided over the Oregon Portland Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
