Abstract

SELECTIVE irradiation of a small part of a living cell with an ultra-violet microbeam has been used to investigate functions of cellular organelles. Functions of the kinetochore, centriole and spindle fibre have been investigated in grasshopper1 and newt2–4 cells in culture, as well as functions of the nucleolus in HeLa cells in culture5. In addition we have investigated radiation damage and recovery phenomena in a living cell by this technique6–8. This work, which involved selectively blocking stomatogenesis, was intended to show the close relationship between stomatogenesis and cell division.
