Abstract
Castledine has challenged stoma care nurses to provide evidence that they are ‘teaching other health care professionals what stoma care is all about’ and that ‘they are open to jealous criticism particularly from those who feel they can do the job just as well’. (‘Are stoma care nurses just bag handlers?’ Vol 2 (2), p. 137). Clearly this invitation and these unsubstantiated comments cannot go undefended. Many general nurses, as well as stoma care nurses, have been angered by the opinion that ‘stoma care nurses are just bag handlers’.
