Abstract

The thermal instability effects caused by laser light on the surfaces of several solids have been investigated experimentally. At sufficiently high-radiation intensities, the evaporation front was found to be unstable and different kinds of periodic structures appeared on the laser-damaged surfaces. The features of irradiated surfaces are connected with developing instabilities of melting and evaporation formed from plasma, and with excitation of surface electromagnetic waves.
