Abstract

Annealed 10 ML Fe films on Au(0 0 1) were studied using STM. Annealing above 670 K causes violent changes of the surface due to Au segregation. At 800 K annealing, formation of nanometer sized plate-like precipitates of gold in the Fe layer is observed. At higher temperatures the precipitates migrate and agglomerate.
