Abstract
Cortisol added in vitro in concentrations of 0.025 μg/ml and higher, significantly inhibited the metabolism of [ 14C 6]glucose to CO 2, fatty acid, and protein during the prolonged incubation of adipose tissue from 96-h fasted normal rats. The steepest portion of the dose response curve was well within the expected range of physiological concentrations of free cortisol in plasma. Deoxycorticosterone and Reichstein compound S were less effective, while triamcinolone and prednisolone exceeded cortisol in potency. Tetrahydrocortisol was without any effect.
