Abstract

A density of 1 × 10 17cm -3 excited centers has been created in Ar crystals by excitation with an intense electron pulse. The crystals emit the Ar ∗ 2 excimer band at 9.8 eV from the 1Σ and 3Σ states with 10 16 photons per pulse. Amplified spontaneous emission from the 1Σ state is indicated by a reduction of the fwhm, by an enhancement of the intensity of the 1Σ band and by the decay of most of the 1Σ population within the excitation pulse duration of 3 x 10 -9s. The Ar ∗ 2 centers have been studied further by optical excitation to higher states.
