Abstract

The aim of this study was to fabricate chitosan hydrogels using a steam sterilization process. This process is simple, rapid and solvent-free. The resultant hydrogels can be used directly for in vitro, in vivo and clinical studies. A drug-laden hydrogel fabricated by this process exhibited a nearly zero-order release up to 7days. We further developed a double-layer hydrogel system for programmed drug release. The drug was encapsulated in the inner layer and released after the degradation of the drug-free outer layer. The delayed release time can be well-controlled by regulating the dimension of the outer layer. This system can be further developed to achieve more complex controlled drug release.
