Abstract

Experimental results on the reduction of ketones by metals in liquid ammonia are summarized. The product yields are very dependent upon the choice of experimental conditions. Theoretical results are presented on some intermediate or products involved in these reductions. Ketyl radical-anions are non planar in their equilibrium conformation. Protonation on oxygen is favoured. The composition of equilibrium mixture of epimers can be calculated to a good approximation.
